Detroit City Map by Kati Rubinyi

Detroit City Map is a haunting photo narrative by Kati Rubinyi taken in 1991 of a cross section of downtown Detroit. The black and white photographs are organized according to the fold lines of a city map and are overlayed with typed print of a newspaper accounts of the race riots which occurred in the 1920’s, 40s and 60s. The barren urban landscape, containing only scenes of old homes and leafless trees, is unnerving in its calm. The words atop the pages remind us of the violent calamity which took hold of the city, forever altering the landscape and leaving behind ghosts
