Autumn of Modernism by Various Artists

Those who are truly contemporary, who truly belong to their time, are those who neither perfectly coincide with it nor adjust themselves to its demands...precisely because of this condition, precisely through this disconnection and this anarchism, they are more capable than others of perceiving and grasping their own time.

In both the exhibition at De Vleeshal, Middleburg and its follow-up publication, Autumn of Modernism addresses the problem of how to define the discrepancy between the present and the contemporary. Contributions by 14 invited artists indirectly respond to the social changes of our day, such as the then-present economic crisis.
