By David Ortega
Insurrectos is a dark and moving comic showing the final moments in the lives of Mexicans jailed for treason during the Mexican Revolution. Because the decade-long civil war had multiple factions vying for power, the prisoners in the cell are not all of the same ideological group. Catholics and Zapatistas argue and fight, but then find their common enemy are the Federal soldiers who are holding them in prison.
This grim story is peppered with humor, and humanizes the struggle for independence that took place a century ago. Dave Ortega’s writing is powerful and haunting. It shares themes and emotions with works by Steinbeck and Poe. And like those authors, Dave’s Insurrectos will stay with you long after you have finished the comic.
