Too different to be the same, yet too much the same to be entirely different. Two city plans—Brasilia, a modernist city built on industrial enterprise, and a spiritual Nossa Lar (Our Home) centering Brazil’s large spiritist movement—were proposed for Brazil’s city structures in the years 1944 and 1956. Jonas Staal responds to these two philosophies, promoting a synthesis of spiritism and modernist architecture through publication, video, and installation that insists on their parallel histories. Printed in English and Portuguese.
