An amazing little hardbound book which really penetrates the concept of book as a physical sculptural art object. Published by Printed Matter in 2003, the book was the winner of I.D. Magazine's Design Distinction award. Absence is a memorial to the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Yoon, an architect, designer, and educator who is currently a Professor of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, chose not to produce a traditional design proposal for the World Trade Center Memorial Competition. Instead she created a non-architectural, non site-specific space of remembrance: a portable personal memorial in the form of book. This dense book weighs in at 2 pounds and has a considerable physical presence with its die-cut shapes throughout the 120 pages, leaving the impression of each of the World Trade Center’s floors. Quiet, respectful, and restrained, this book speaks without words of absolute loss and mourning.
