The National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts), in partnership with co-curators Cristina Favretto, curator and head of Special Collections at the University of Miami, and Amanda Keeley, visual artist and founder of EXILE Books, will present Love! Rage!! Passion!!! The World of Zines in the Frank Gehry- designed YoungArts Gallery from April 9-May 15, 2015. This free exhibition examines both the resurgent academic and popular interest in zines and the youths who engage this medium as a form of expression.
Zines, which date back to the 1920s with mimeograph science fiction fanzines, enjoyed a massive resurgence in the "do-it-yourself yourself" (DIY) punk counterculture of the 1970s. They are DIY small circulation publications, typically handmade and photocopied. These limited-edition publications provide a forum for makers and readers to embrace an underground culture apart from digital technologies, forging identities within a space of their own creation. They also empower youths by providing a platform for uninhibited expression.
Love! Rage!! Passion!!! The World of Zines will provide a comprehensive overview of this provocative medium. The first floor of the YoungArts Gallery will feature zines created by YoungArts Alumni Carolyn Kerchof, Camila Lohezic, Sue Montoya, Luz Orozco, Celia Shaheen, and Catherine Valdez; an EXILE Books pop- up shop featuring a selection of zines and related artists’ publications; and an area for visitors to create their own zines. To provide historical context, Favretto will select zines from the University of Miami’s Special Collections to place on view in the first and second floors of the Gallery. These will include zines that represent youth, anti-establishment and punk DIY creativity. The publications will cover diverse subject matters ranging from music, literature, comix, science fiction, and gender issues to spirituality, politics, personal experiences, and single topic fanzines.
On April 26, Love! Rage!! Passion!!! The World of Zines will take over the YoungArts Plaza for the Miami Zine Fair, in partnership with O, Miami. This free Fair will provide artists with the opportunity to come together as a community and share their latest creations with each other and the public.
